PROJECT PROPOSAL

TREATMENT

My short film will be focused on the monologue of one character, guiding the audience through her thoughts with the purpose of creating an unreliable narrator, who is overtly pompous and narcissistic. These character traits are meant to be excessive as this will allow the viewer to find humour in her unreasonable behaviour toward menial, unimportant topics like interest in the arts, her routines and the successes in her life. I am aiming to relate this short film to young adults aged between 16-25 as the satire and parodic approach will be appreciated as this generation applies much of the same humour. Much content now is experimented with as the short film has become popular with Youtube as it’s an easy publishing opportunity and mainly used by young people. Because of this, young filmmakers can continuously create an output of short films experimenting with each thus possibly more receptive to inventive and exploratory content.

The ‘black comedy’ style will come through the use of humorous dialogue and supporting soundtrack, while dealing with the difficult subject of sociopathy and narcissism. The dialogue is the most important and expressive tool in the film, it will be strictly adhered to as each word is meticulously thought through to follow and convey the sociopathic nature and create a perceived idea of the character that the audience will receive through this.  Set in a barren room unrecognised as the college studio, I will have the actor talk directly to the audience/camera thus seeming as if she is directing the story, although it will be set in one location and set time, the performance and camera angles will create a dimensional film enticing for the viewer.

I plan on administering a slow, controlled pace for the introduction and a gradual increase as the climax will become more intense. This is to catch the audience off guard and deliver an unexpected outcome that will involve the viewer by questioning the intentions of the character. A linear narrative structure will be conducted to keep it cohesive and easy to follow, as my focus will be mainly on the performance.

I would like to use steady shots by using a tripod and experiment with long, close and directional angles. Wide shots used for a sense of isolation, close-ups for important quotes and enhanced performance, and low, high and tilted angles to disorient the viewer. I would like to use red-head lighting during the monologue shining down on the actor to create a sense of divinity, however I may try different angles and see which I prefer.

By recording audio during the continuous face-on scene, syncing in the edit won’t be an issue and using a boom microphone will ensure high quality audio.  I have created a backstory for the character to follow and influence the output of her performance as well as generating a purpose for the monologue.
