PRE-PRODUCTION

SCREENPLAY- FIRST DRAFT

I created a skeleton screenplay of what I wanted to include in the monologue to be later dissected, improved upon and further developed. I did not use this draft as the final screenplay as I wanted a higher-level of vocabulary to display the characters personality and social class. I also wanted to change the conclusion as it was not in keeping with this perception of superiority as it seemed too concerned about others judgements.

SCREENPLAY- FINAL DRAFT

The final draft of the monologue displays my initial aims of over-confidence and egocentric characteristics through bragging about her success and importance. I also included her thoughts on the 'arts' as the topic is very subjective and her 'all-knowing' attitude toward it is laughable. This choice was also to show her failing attempt at being down to earth and lack of self-awareness for comedic effect.

SCREENPLAY - NOTES

IMG_0486.jpg

I thought of filming a b-roll shot of hands fidgeting, it was helpful in the edit and final film as it breaks up the continuous face-on shots which could become repetitive without it.

The routine segment was too drawn out and seemed out of place. I realised after watching it over it lost my interest and didn't make liable sense as to why she would be talking about this. Ultimately, it didn't progress the story in any way.

Initially, I thought of creating this to show her attempt at being self-aware, only to make it obvious she is only showing off. However, I did not use this in the final edit as I only shot it a couple times and was not satisfied with the performance. I also think if I had inserted it, it would have made the sequence unnecessarily long and I believe the audience could have lost interest.

The close up under chin was to display her feeling of superiority, especially for the lines corresponding 'someone who shines down hope'.

I did not use the close up shots in the edit, although I did film them. I thought they seemed too forced and unnatural. Instead I either prolonged the shot or cut to a steady shot. I think this worked better as it followed the characters blasé tone.

I filmed a continuous shot to cut back to for a feeling of stability and steady flow of time able to insert important shots between them.

Character Profile

This character is self-absorbed and narcissistic. The motivation of her envy comes from her sisters success in the arts. Thinking the profession is over rated and unqualified, she is perplexed and resentful toward her. Working hard to obtain her position of running her own company, the seemingly undeserving success her sister received enrages her. The film is almost a way to prove to herself of her 'profound greatness' and betterment compared.
